Jessie Long is a woman with grit, beauty and fierce ambition. Her unrelenting quest for fame comes at a cost, an issue which author Kevin Symmons explores with panache and pacing . Readers are drawn into the age-old debate about "having it all" and the need to make hard choices in one's professional and personal lives. I admired Jessie, a character rife with contradictions but full of courage. In fact, I considered her far superior to the hunky love interest for whom she pines. As Symmons skillfully leads us through the plot line, one must reflect upon how often glitz and glamour obscure pain, especially in the 24/7 glare of the media. The elements of suspense in this thriller allow SOLO to rise above the often mawkish "women's fiction" flooding the book market. One cheers for Jessie as she confronts a host of obstacles both external and internal.
To paraphrase that old saying, "She who seeks the gold of the Indies, must carry it home with her."

My Review
Jessica Long, he has had a dreadful past, an abusive father and many losses. Now she works as hard as she can to support her young daughter and her sickly mother. When she receives a job at a restaurant, she didn't expect to find out that there were certain things playing a part in getting her hired there in the first place.
Matthew Sullivan, was a star at hockey when his knee was shattered, he just knew that there was no hope of ever playing again. He has to work two jobs to support his family, but without a wife and children he really hasn't got too much to worry about. But that all may change, when one morning he and a friend head to a restaurant for breakfast. Meeting the new waitress Jesse sends him stumbling over both his feet and his words. Little does he know that Jesse has a dream to become a singer and when that dream may finally come true, he thinks he may lose her forever.
When they finally meet up once more, it is obvious that there may be more to the Broadway production than it appears. With so much riding on Jesse's decision, will she lose everything that she has ever wanted?
Solo is a good read and a real page turner. Just a note, there is some foul language, but not too much. A nice good read that took me one day to complete. With a strong plot line and interesting characters, it made Solo and good piece of fiction.
**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from Pump Up Your Book.
I have read all of his books and they were great. This one kept you guessing until the end. Looking forward to his next new book
Unlike the other glowing reviews, I did not find myself totally enamored of this book. It was nicely written, and I grew to like the main characters even though I could not totally buy into the love-of-my-life scenario augmented by astoundingly successful careers (not to mention the continual crying). I found the story dragged a bit as Matt determinedly slogged through Jesse's mysterious background but appreciated the lack of typos.
Kevin uses visual descriptions of people, events and places that make his novels pop to life and keep you intrigued throughout the reading experience. I have enjoyed all three of his wrightings and cannot wait for his next publication.
Great book, well written. Could not put it down. Anxious to read more of his work.

Solo, a work of contemporary women's fiction, tells the story of Jesse Long and how she abandons her musical studies to take the lead in a Broadway musical. In doing so, she loses Matt, the only man she ever loved. He in turn does not fight to keep her. Solo is the story of two good people making bad decisions.
During the fifteen years the novel spans, Jesse becomes a celebrated singer and Matt a successful writer. Both settle for other partners, but neither can forget the other.
Jesse is haunted by twin tragedies from her past, the horrifying details of which emerge as the novel progresses. Trouble follows her. As an adult, her life is ruined by blackmailers and a killer.
The characters are solidly defined, and the plot is dense, well-paced and leads to a startling conclusion.
